You know how people are always going away on holiday with their kids? Well, I don’t have kids. I have dogs. Since my dogs are the closest thing I have to kids, I decided to take them away for the weekend.
The destination was Stone Hill – a 4 star self-catering, pet-friendly place in Magaliesburg. They have 8 secluded timber cottages that accommodate 2 to 6 guests each, with fully fenced gardens log fireplaces, fully fitted kitchens, bedrooms and full bathrooms.
We stayed in the Jacaranda Garden Suite for the weekend with our dogs and had a fantastic time! Our hosts, Caroline and Mark are a lovely, fun, interesting couple who are very friendly and helpful.
It’s self-catering, but has all everything you need, including a stove, oven, microwave and braai. It is also fully stocked with crockey and kitchen utensils. It has a full bathroom (bath and shower), comfy double bed, lounge area and TV with full DSTV.
Even though the garden suite is part of the main house (with its own entrance though, so still quite private), it’s very quiet and relaxing. It’s also very neat and pretty, with carefully thought out details, such as an outdoor shower to clean your dogs.
Because the Jacaranda Suite forms part of the house, Caroline and Mark’s 8 dogs will come to visit or just occasionally wander past. If your dogs make friends easily, this is great, and they’ll really enjoy the company. Also, the garden is enormous and my two kept themselves very busy.
The dogs are very friendly, but if your dogs are nervous around large packs or around big dog breeds, you will probably be more comfortable in one of the other cottages, which are more secluded.
There are also feral cats in the area, which Caroline does inform you of but I somehow missed. They don’t bother you in any way, but my dogs aren’t very familiar with cats so they’d go off after them. Luckily the cats are quick, but it’s something to keep in mind.
All in all, it was a fantastic weekend with great accommodation and lovely walks to take with your dogs. They can run off the leash, and there are plenty of interesting smells to entertain them. It’s also only an hour out of Pretoria, so it’s ideal for a weekend getaway.
My dogs thoroughly wore themselves out with excitement, sleeping the whole way home in the car and then sleeping the evening away as well. It was adorable, and we cannot wait to return!
